West Elks AVA

What makes the West Elks AVA special? What’s an AVA?

Terror Creek Vineyard and Mt Lamborn

Summertime: what wine country looks like high up on the western slope of Colorado’s Rocky Mountains.

An American Viticultural Area (AVA) identifies unique geographic and climactic features that distinguish the qualities of the region’s grape-growing. Terror Creek Winery is situated in the West Elks AVA, one of only two AVA designations in Colorado. Named after the iconic West Elk mountain range, the West Elks AVA covers a rugged high-altitude region of Delta county on the western slope of the Rocky Mountains in Colorado. It boasts of some of the highest vineyards in North America.

West Elks AVA is noted for Pinot Noir, one of the world’s classic reds. White wines such as Riesling and Gewurztraminer excel, as does Pinot Gris and Chardonnay.

Wintertime: vineyards sleep under a deep blanket of snow at Terror Creek.

Sunny days, high elevation and low humidity coupled with cool nights help retain a high degree of acidity as the grapes ripen, creating ideal growing conditions for producing premium-quality wine grapes.
